The Wandering Mind by Open Spaces is a 4 track EP of immersive, binaural ambience and melodic gesture.

Transcendental synth drones slowly evolve and cascade around field recordings, whilst textural and melodic gestures emerge and disappear like passing thoughts.

In that sense, Open Spaces’ really does capture the EP’s title concept of a ‘Wandering Mind’. The single is called Day Dreaming and can be heard below from our Soundcloud.

Passing by gently, this EP leaves the listeners with moments of introspection, hope, melancholy, and bliss.

This record is mixed in 360 and encoded to binaural stereo for deepest immersion for the headphone listeners.

Christopher Hancock is the creator, and is a music producer, artist and lecturer in Audio and Music at SAE Sydney. He is currently doing his masters in 360 audio technologies. This record is consequently mixed in 360 in order to create a more immersive experience and enhance the effectivity of the solfeggio frequencies and binaural beats. Winter Rain is a 3 part, live ambient improvisation that comes across as a devotional ambient masterpiece.

The EP captures the deep and tender emotions involved in the human experience. The track, Errors are Necessary, reveals a gentle wisdom and maturity that is reflected throughout this record.

There is a majesty of sound that also speaks of something larger and more eternal than the human experience. Be it the grand Blue Mountains that Broken Chip calls home, or something more ethereal, there is an unmistakable sacred tonality to this record.

Technically, Broken Chip is somewhat of a synths collector and synth enthusiast. His mastery of synthesis can be heard in this rolling, layered, constantly evolving synth tapestry.

Lo Fi Sunsets marks The Horizontal Society’s fourth release on lo fi spiritual and their first release of 2021.

True to their sound, The Horizontal Society offers a palette of warm, tape-saturated tambura drones slowed down to an almost catatonic state. These drones are then woven with layers of nature field recordings to suspend the listener in a surreal, timeless earthly domain.

Murky, trance-inducing rhythms occasionally swell through the immersive haze of sound to guide the listener through the wall of sound. Again adding to the hypnotic suspension of time.

At other points, the use of ancient emotive motifs in voice and synthesised sound, direct the listener’s mood state to a more sentimental space.

The essence of the title and the inspiration behind this release is the setting sun, in particular, the stunning sunsets over the escarpment of the South Coast NSW, as featured on the front cover.

Lo Fi Sunsets brings the listener into a space that speaks of the nostalgia and beauty of the setting sun and is a testament to The Horizontal Society’s ability to capture nuance.

Shinrin-yoku means forest bathing in Japanese, to take in the atmosphere of the forest through our senses. It is generally held that such forest bathing is good for humans, that it returns people to a slower more reflective state than generally possible in the pace of city life or modern life in general. Note in Australia, the forests are called the bush.

This debut album from Bushwalks attempts to bring this medicine of the Australian bush to the listener. Each track weaves bush field recordings with melodic motifs and general sonic experimentation to create an immersive, somewhat psychedelic, and sacred place.

At times peaceful, at times melancholic, Shinrin-Yoku captures the ability of the bush to act as a reflective space for humans to unpack their minds and recent experiences.

We hope that this debut album from Bushwalks brings you some bush medicine and that you too can enjoy a bushwalk or forest bath in the near future.

Bushwalks would like to acknowledge the Dharawal people, the traditional owners, and custodians of the land on which Bushwalks lives.

Think lush atmospheric sound beds with auto-tuned, male falsetto guiding the track’s emotive direction. Postcards is an ethereal, beautiful collaborative work between vocalist Dylan Regtop aka SääD, pictured above, and Ambien, one of the aliases of producer Chris Hancock.

At the time of the recording, both artists lived in the Australian inner-city suburb of Redfern, and enjoyed an evening beer at their local pub, The Tudor Hotel. It was at closing time after one of their social drinking sessions that this album was recorded. Chris’ studio at the time, was just across the road from the pub.

Dylan and Chris have long been musical muses. Both artists have two children and met in the playground of Redfern park whilst on Dad duty. You could say that this collaboration was inevitable.

Sadly for their friendship, Chris has now moved out of the city to the south coast. This record is therefore more of a postcard from Chris to Dylan; a record of their former lives.

Small Shrine is a 3 part live ambient improvisation by Blue Mountains artist Broken Chip. The EP captures the vast expansiveness of the artist’s geographical location as well as their reflective, poetic nature.

The first track, Maybe, is steeped in the expansive, reflective atmosphere of Broken Chip’s mountain dwelling. It brings forth an almost melancholic sense of being alone in a vast environment.

The second track, Signs To Guide You Through has a positivity and a warmth appropriate to the tracks title. It’s like a long play atmosphere of hope to guide one through darker times. Further, it has a layer of noise and, distortion suggestive of the imperfections of the human condition.

The third track Small Shrine is the title track and is akin to the resolution of the EP. It speaks of a balanced middle path between hope and fear. The track is imbued with the calm and serenity associated with shrines and holy spaces.

Broken Chip is the ambient alias of music producer Marty Palmer, Under this alias Martyn has released music on labels such as Feral Media, A Future Without, 3BS, Provenance plus a range of beautiful self releases on his bandcamp.

He is a much loved and respected long term member of the Australian ambient scene.

7 Days 7 Drones is a survival kit of drones built with love by The Horizontal Society. A drone for each day of the week to engender strength, resilience and calm in crazy times. The record acknowledges the intensities of 2020, and empathises with the humans going through such times.

Each drone was created for a specific day of the week. Drone for Tuesday, for example, was created to imbue the listener with the fortitude and perseverance that Tuesdays sometimes call for.

Further, taking into account the ruling planet for each day, each track has sonic motifs that relate to the planet of influence.

Shadow Work by Contact 17b is a 3 track release focusing on the idea of shadow work. The idea of the shadow in Psychology or spiritual paths, is the darker ignored part of our selves, the impulsive, the animalistic; our “demons” in short. The belief is that one must face, understand and accept their shadow side to become whole and reach their best version of self.

The record acknowledges and empathises with the intensities of 2020 and the idea that COVID-19 isolation, amongst other factors, are forcing more people than ever to have to face their demons.

Whilst, lo fi spiritual, was set up to release beautiful vibes into the world, we also see the necessity to provide darker, textured journeys to accompany the traveller through intensities such as shadow work.
